Show us your Polished Fossils!

Recommended Posts

I had just recently finished polishing a piece of petrified wood I found, and I just read a topic that included a polished pyritized Yorkshire cannonball ammonite, which got me thinking about all the types of fossils that can be polished. I did a search on the forum for a "Show us your" polished fossils thread and couldn't find any so decided to start one as I'm interested to see the diversity of fossils that have been polished. So...

It is only befitting that you start us off with a pic of yours first.:)

Alright, I’ll take some pictures tomorrow that are actually worth sharing, one could say polished photos.

I know it doesn't count because I bought it, but I'm so proud of this little guy that I thought I'd share.  I can't collect where I live, so I can really only buy things.

SPECIES - Metacanthina issoumourensis
AGE - Lower Devonian (Pragian Stage)
LOCATION - Lghaft, Morocco
FORMATION - Lhandar Formation
SIZE - 1.85" long
This is an 1.85" long specimen of Metacanthina issoumourensis often referred to as an "Asteropyge" or “Kayserops”. It was quarried near Lghaft, Morocco. There is about 5% shell restoration on this specimen, primarily on its glabella.

Thank you Roger and Frank for attaching those albums! Also nice prep and polish on that echinoid RJB!

And I always love a good trilobite, thanks for sharing Joshua.

Here’s my piece, it’s from the Late Cretaceous Dawson Arkose Formation, east and south of Denver, Colorado. I don’t have a rock saw so I have to look for naturally flat pieces to polish. This leads to most of the time being spent using 60 grit sandpaper to get a flat surface.

This particular piece is only about 5cm (2 inches) but shows some good detail.

Here’s the piece

Here’s a couple images through a microscope, diameter of the circle is about 5mm. Some cells are visible in the first image.

Although not "polished" in the strictest sense, I coated this large chain coral from the Vulcan Quarry near Parsons, TN with acrylic - my first attempt at this technique. The specimen only displayed well when wet and I couldn't polish this size piece. The light blue grid is one inch.

I have quite a few polished Stromatolites and pieces of wood.

Shown them in various other threads, so probably just duplication to repost here ???

You could give us a few links. It's quite probable that not everybody has seen them.
