Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show 2023 PHOTOS

My annual information topic on the Tucson Fossil Show.  Right now it looks like 43 different shows if you are including Gems, Minerals and  Fossils.  The latter being the smallest segment of the Show but the coolest :D . For those of you who went to this years show I don't expect much of a change but we still have a bit of time to go.   Unfortunately the show has evolved from from a couple of close venues to now being all over the place.  Just take more time and patience with parking.

When to arrive:  My suggestion is when the dealers open :D.  This will give you the best opportunity to pick up specimens before the online dealers rush in and buy everything especially with Dinosaur material.   Not easy since some venues have a hard opening time that coincide with other ones.

This is best overall link to obtain information on all the venues

Here are the key Fossil Venues that get my attention but you should find Fossils at most venues.

Fossil and Mineral Alley at the Days Inn Tucson City Center

Official Dates: Jan 27 to Feb 12  however dealers start arriving early in the week and will open when they are ready

Vendor Listing: 72 (Up from last year)  https://xpopress.com/show/vendors/25/fossil-mineral-alley

Highlights:   Best venue for Fossils both Shark and Dinosaur.   Lots of European dealer with Invertebrates

22nd Street Mineral, Fossil, Gem Show  (huge tents)

Opening Date: Jan 26  Closes: Feb 12  no early entrance Opens at 10am sharp.   Parking $$$ is a rip off...

Vendor Listing: 306 ( up from last year)  https://xpopress.com/show/vendors/17/22nd-street-mineral-fossil-gem-jewelry-show

Highlights:  Mostly Trinkets and Gems, fair amount of  minerals and some good fossils dealers.   Triebold Paleontology typically has great displays.

Wear good shoes, lots of walking.  Mobs of people especially on weekends.  I go but not my favorite place.

I happened to be going into Tucson last week and drove by the 22nd St show venue..  To my amazement the super long tents were up and workers hard at work...

Here are some photos from my quick visit today.    Most everyone in place at the Days Inn Venue.

Probably one of the most expensive fossils at the show in the low 6 figures range is this 8 inch T rex foot claw.   Not something you see very often or ever at a show.  Glad I was able to hold it....

So who will mortgage their house for one of these bad boys.

Probably the second most expensive item at the show is this unerupted 4 inch trex tooth still in the jaw.

Some lovely Morisson fm material

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

Yes and I indicated low six figures.  Impossible to say what the actual realized price will be.

Beautiful! Thank you for the photos, it's a nice virtual visit for those like me who can't realistically visit. Were there any crinoids?

Sorry not the best photo

This is a replica of  Protosuchus richardsoni, Triebold Paleontology was commissioned to make by Mark Norell of the AMNH.   It's one of the most primitive crocodylomorphs.  It lived during the Late Triassic ~210 mil yrs ago. It was a small animal w/ long limbs, suggesting that its locomotion was more like a cat’s than like that of a modern crocodilian!  Mark wanted this replica available to the public.

P1260137.thumb.jpg.3f0a395b80c26cb6342d6ae882fc48bd.jpg

@jpc  JP while I was at Triebold I asked Mike about that Didelphodon replica we talked about in a prior post.   He collected the original and its 35% complete.   The skull is almost complete from the original find and parts of elements from other states.  Other bone elements were found that he incorporated to complete the skeleton.

Frank-

a few days after that I attended a zoom talk by one of Triebold's guys and asked him the same question and got the same answer.  Thanks, though.

Fantastic photos as always thank you for taking the time to share them with the community. Also that huge onchopristis was that a composite or all from one specimen? If so that's incredible!

Lots of discussion recently about Niger material and I was shocked to see these claws.   Some are complete, some have the tips and back restored so they are all different.   I asked the seller how he was able to identify them and he just indicated that he spent lots of time reviewing publications.   Interesting because there is hardly anything published on a good number of these theropods and hardly anything on claws.    They are massive and expensive:  BEWARE
