hndmarshall
this one is really odd it is almost plant like in texture when viewed under microscope (pics included) the texture follows the curves of the fossil looking almost like hair under the microscope...sorry only way I could describe it .... It has a dark area along with what look like leafy or hairy parts on it.
Rockwood
The texture makes me think the dark color is stain or weathering. I'm going to set color aside and suggest maybe something like serpentine ?
Coco
Hi, Only the inhabitants of the American continent know the size of your coin... Don’t you have a ruler in cm or inches ? Coco

Coco Why does this require a greater degree of accuracy than can be gleaned from the images regardless of the coins dimensions ?

I think @Coco is merely trying to get members to use the proper tool for sizing an object, regardless if size matters when trying to obtain an ID, with certain items. 1
Coco
@Darktooth has understood everything : I try to indicate the right reflexes to adopt when requesting an identification, especially since the OP has posted several requests with each time a coin. We can never educate enough. When new members see pictures with objects, coins or bank notes used as scales of measure, they do the same. It’s an education all the time... 1

hndmarshall
will try to get better pics and a measurement. Those last three pics is of the texture of the rock itself the way it flows it seems more like some sort of petrified wood. Will also try to get pics of it wet and more magnification or the dark area and its end.

I am using the quarter because I don't have anything else to compare to I do not have a ruler or tape measure and i can not print the measure page offered due to no ink for printer. so i am working with what i have.... sorry. hndmarshall
First three pics are of the flat end piece of the black mass on the one corner of the piece.. The next 5 pics are of the piece wet... the last two are - one of the dark area and one of the light area it would seem that after cleaning some of the light areas became darker as more dark came through. You can use anything for scale just l to let the readers know what is the size of the object used for scale or less us know what the size of the rock or fossil is.
fifbrindacier
Hi, i sometimes use a chequered paper which squares are half a centimeter (heir size is usually written on the wrapping), a cheap school ruler or a measureing tape for sewing but i'm sure you yet thought about those tools. This said, i understand well why you think it might be wood. @paleoflor @nala ?
