They said it's a Mosasaur vertebrae?

This pic was online and said mosasaur vert. is that true? When I find these I thought they where fish vert. Thanks.

Just goes to show how eye opening it is, to realize that not everything posted online is true.

Fossils are often misidentified online, either by design or innocent ignorance.

The preservation resembles the fish material from the Cretaceous Niobrara Chalk of Kansas. Perhaps Gillicus sp. or Cimolichthys sp.

 Sadly it's the 1st thing that pops up when you search Mosasaur vertebra sale.

Indeed.  With fossils like all else I suppose, it is Buyer Beware.

 

The sheer number of fossil frankensteins and misidentifications on certain auction sites is disturbing

Often fossils are intentionally misidentified to sell better. A Mosasaur vertebra will sell for more than a fish vertebra. An American or European Mosasaur tooth will always sell better than a Moroccan one
