Walmart Bag
I am no expert in fossil hunting, its just a hobby but while I was in Big Brook, New Jersey (a stream where many people go to find shark teeth and such), I was downstream and after sifting through my pan I came across this fossil. At the time I didnt even know it was a fossil i just thought it was a cool looking rock (im 17 btw). Now looking back at it I feel like it is a fish head, but I have no idea honestly. Could somebody tell me if this is a random rock or a fish head? I can attach several images of it down here. Thanks!
FranzBernhard
Welcome to TFF from Austria! While the first pic looks like somewhat of a fish head, it is not. It is a suggestively shaped rock. Your first diagnosis was correct! Franz Bernhard 1
Walmart Bag
Hey Franz Bernhard Thank you for the info haha, I suspected it was a "fishy" rock.
Jeffrey P
A complete fish skull, or any skull for that matter, has never been found in the Cretaceous streams of New Jersey. Skull fragments, especially pieces of jaw bone of marine reptiles and especially fish are not uncommon, but are often hard to identify. Keep looking. Maybe you'll find something good eventually. Best wishes. +.
