what is this oddity?

Picked this up in some gravel from the Brazos river I have no idea what this might be.

 

Sorry I still have not found my measuring tape or ruler.

Well, that is an odd one. Sometimes the combination of poor preservation and incomplete parts makes an ID impossible. If we knew the age that might be enough to spark recognition by someone who has found a better example. Since the Brazos cuts through many different geological formations, a better location may help. Just the nearest town or landmark will do.

A quarter measures about 2.5 cm. That should do for now.

as far as I know best estimate would be west of Houston Texas.

Thanks, that makes it Quaternary deposits locally but it may have eroded out washed downstream from a Cretaceous formation.  Maybe that will help someone eliminate some possibilities.
