Lunazul
Hello everyone, this my 1st entry is to find some help to identify if these are fossils since I'm new in this world of fossils & rocks. I live in the island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and I've seen corals and reefs and these specimens looks like some wich I've seen. Both have cristal or quartz like features all over and the hardness is like that of quartz. One is like cramy orange in color and the other is like ivory or cream in color. But the last one is totally different because there are a ring of quartz bits on top of that sedimentary rock like shown in the last photos. The location where I found them was in a river in the mountains of the east center of the island (not in the coast) Thanks for the help in advance and please excuse if any errors made. Tidgy's Dad
Hello, and a very warm welcome to TFF from Morocco. Some of these look geological, some possibly fossils, I'm not sure. Maybe my friend Christaleen @GallinaPinta can throw more light on these? 3 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
Ludwigia
These stones look more mineralogical than fossiliferous to me. 1 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
GallinaPinta
They're mineral rocks, however the first one is a type I always find whenever I stumble over rock beds containing incredible amounts of crassostrea and coral fossils. My guess would be that the first one is indeed a fossil. I can't give you a clear ID though. Im not good at IDs. But if you wouldn't mind, you could soak the stone and if possible, carefully remove the matrix on top, the one I highlighted in blue, and only then can we be sure if it's some kind of shell fragment.
GallinaPinta
Here is an example of what I mean. This fossil was a complete stone until i removed the matrix from the top and turned out the white mineral borders were actually part of an oyster... GallinaPinta
This was the result after I finished removing the matrix on top.
Lunazul
Thank you everyone for the replies, I've found it not only interesting but useful cuz I gather all the info you gave me and continue researching on the web. There's no better way of learning than "trial & error". And @GallinaPinta my fellow 'compatriota', that is amazing! There's so many things I would like to discuss with you yet so little time... I saw your post about the bone you found in San Sebastian and I felt the emotion almost as if it was me who found it... is biggest than what I expected to be found here. I knew in my heart there were bone fossils around here...we just have to look and have an eye for it. There were little mammals and lizard like creatures which bones have been found in your area...was it you who found them? I'm glad to found a person here who has a true passion for this. And thank you very much for the advise. I believe I have the tools for that mission... I'll let you know what came out of it. And btw...this I also found it in the same place (crinoids?) and kind of looks like there's something inside too...should I try that with these too?...sorry don't put the ruler this time. The biggest one is a little bigger than my hand & the little one is about 2" all sides approximately
