Helen.Cornwell
I found this on the beach. It is heavy and looks like a fossil. Under close examination it looks like layers of gauze. Can you help?
SomethingIsFishy
Welcome to TFF. It look like what you found is a rock that is agatized. Although I don't think it is a fossil, it is still a really cool and unique looking find. The only other thing it could be is an agatized coprolite (fossilized poop) but I highly doubt it. Even if its not a fossil, it is still a very unique and beautiful looking rock. Nice find!
Helen.Cornwell
Thank you SomethingIsFishy! Sorry for putting up so many pictures, but the closer you look, the more interesting it looks. Looks like bone, but then it also looks like layers of skin. Interesting to hear that it may be agatized rock...LOL. Thanks for your time.

I see lots and lots of regular, small openings and a layered structure. My guess is, that it is a recent bryozoan colony, composed of calcium carbonate. TqB
I agree with Franz, bryozoan, probably modern. 1 1 2 Tarquin

Carl
Another vote for weathered, modern, bryozoan colony. 1
Helen.Cornwell
Thank you Franz! I believe you are correct. Found this article with a photo that resembles the layering. https://www.colorado.edu/cumuseum/2021/01/13/bryozoan. Perhaps it is an old whorl encrusted with a Bryozoan colony? The underlying shape somewhat mimics that of a whorl. Is it worth keeping?

Bryozoans encrust many different things. 1 hour ago, Helen.Cornwell said: Is it worth keeping? Its totally in the eye of the beholder . Oh, wow, did not know that there are some invasive bryozoan species out there! Franz Bernhard 1
