Fotsirk
Hi. I recently went to a fossil show. I didn't saw anything i really liked but my wife saw these trilobites and wanted them. So i got them as a gift for her. Normally she's not in to fossils. So i wanted to know how much of these are real or repaired. If u need more pics i can take some but we dont have good daylight but i will try Thanks
rocket
hard to decide, do you have blacklight? Might be 80% real..., but there are so many casts on the market, I would not like to decide without...
Crusty_Crab
This seems really odd. Each thoracic segment gives rise to a spine except for the segment closest to the cephalon, which give rise to 2 spines. As I understand trilobite ontogeny, this doesn't really make sense. Its unclear as to why segments closer to the pygidium have only 1 spine while that closest to the cephalon has 2 spines. Spines can be longer, which is how they proved that thoracic segments originated in the pygidium rather than the cephalon: https://www.trilobites.info/ontogeny.htm. I'm unaware of an example where 2 spines originate from the same segment though. Edited December 30, 2022 by Crusty_Crab grammar
Crusty_Crab
Am I even looking at the same specimen? These pictures now show the anterior spine is now a genal spine. 4 hours ago, Fotsirk said: Hi. I recently went to a fossil show. Top Trilo
I'm not sure about the trilobites themselves however there is a distinct difference in matrix texture/color which points to this being a composite. 1 “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. Uncanny, as I was just about to remark on that! 1 ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
