White River Prep - Rodent

Recommended Posts

I was inspired by another WR post and thought I'd share what I was working on today.

I had a small rock with a sliver of rostrum showing (white bone).  Poked at it a bit with a microjack and it just kept going.  All scope work so far.

Was hoping for a cranium but no such luck.  No nasals either.

Now I'm trying to decide how it should display and how I was to expose the cheek teeth.

Here it is sitting flat.

And I'm thinking I will stand it on edge for display, like so.

Will have to remove the matrix on top and prep out the cheek teeth to identify.  My initial guess is Paradjidaumo though based on the short incisors and size.

Amazing to look at his fossil,,,,,, and then over to your thumbnail!!!

RB

And here I am thinking it's a medium size rodent!  They get smaller...

Quick pic of the buried face.  Better view of the infraorbital foramen on this side.  Working my way underneath now.

One more pic for this morning.  I have to stop for a bit, my hand gets jittery after being under a scope for more than an hour.  Or at least jittery enough to be a problem at this scale.

Going to try to see if I can confirm an ID now though.  Any rodent experts we can summon?  I don't think I've ever seen one but I am thinking Eutypomys@jpc  Sent a pic to Ephraim btw.

Pretty pleased with the quality of picture from my phone at 5x.  Tooth row is approximately 8mm.

Have oyu tried Bill Korth?

https://naz.academia.edu/BillKorth

Ephriam might know as well.  I, on the other hand, do not.  I have been collecting Korth papers as I run across them but downloading is a long ways from reading and studying and learning.  Retirement project.

Nice photo by the way.

Thanks, I will try to contact him.

I too have many papers from Korth.  Wood seems to have published quite a fair bit as well.  Not enough time in a day to memorize it all.  :)

Stopping here for now until I have a positive ID.  I do suspect Eutypomys, the skull is beaver-ish.  Not too shabby for a couple of afternoons.

It could use some beautification on the matrix and a good hour or two of picking individual grains off with a needle but good enough for today!

The second tooth row was along the glue seam and I knew some of the teeth there would be 'bad' so I've left it disguised a bit at the moment as well.  Work for another day if it becomes publishable/important.

Hope you all enjoyed!  On to the next project...

Per Korth.

It looks like Prosciurus or Altasciurus (or a close relative). It would be in the family Aplodontidea and in the subfamily Prosciurinae.

Looking good!

I think it would be cool to prep such a small skull, but it would also be kind of hard...

Cheers and Shalom

It takes patience, practice, and the right tools but it's very rewarding in my opinion.

Here is an older post I did that has the techniques and tools I use.

Yes, it is very rewarding! I am just having some trouble with the patience part... But I think pretty much every paleontologist struggles with it at least a little bit.

Thanks! I have actually read it before, but it was nice to look through it again.

Cheers and Shalom,
