Petrified Wood?

Hi everyone,

I was on my way to my doctors appointment. I was walking to the door, when this caught my eye in the gravel. I thought it was wood at first, but I was mistaken. It’s definitely a rock.

It was found in Twin Falls, Idaho, near the sidewalk.

I’m looking for confirmation. Is this petrified wood?

If it is, it’s my first find of 2023!

I'm not convinced by this small sample that it is wood. My brother lives in Nampa though, and he is often unimpressed by the quality of the wood he finds. Knowing the source of the gravel could help. Wood is usually relatively common where it is found.

Looks more like slikensides / slikenfibers.

What exactly are those? A type of fossil or a type of rock?

It forms in faults, where tectonic movements are shifting crustal plates relative to each other. Fluids deposit soluble minerals in the crack.

I see now, thank you. Not that I look at it, you may be right.
