What are your goals for 2023 ?

Yoda

Recommended Posts

Traditionally in early January one reviews where one is, and sets goals for the coming year.

So as the topic says: What are your palaeontological goals for 2023 ?

For myself:

I don't get out collecting much. So I would like to go into the field at least once this year.

Also, I seem to have added Ammonites to the list of fossils I concentrate on. I want to add a few more, and of course do the research surrounding that.

I didn't really start hunting regularly until April 2022 (had made a few beach trips only before then), so this past year has been a lot of learning and exploring. Goals for 2023 are:

1. Find a few more good sites (not that easy in Summerville)

2. Find a nice meg (whole and not too worn.  I don't have size requirements...yet.)

3. Find a cow shark tooth (this is definitely shooting high)

4. Focus more on quality over quantity.  Quantity was fine for a beginner and helped me learn, but you only need so many broken teeth.

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

in the field, hm, hope to find some time to go to dig, but time runs...

I hope to finish some papers in 2023 I could not end in 2022, 2021, 200..., and some new ones

  • Yoda changed the title to What are your goals for 2023 ?

Well it's incredible because my goal and my "dream" for 2023 has already come true... I will soon share this discovery on the forum: a piece of Cenomanian amber with insects included, from a site that I have been prospecting for a long time and which had given me very beautiful pieces of amber and jet but I have never found an insect until this day in January 2023!

A pair of researchers found me a few weeks ago, so I'll likely be providing specimens and possibly doing some collaborative desk work. Early days on that front. I hope to do a bit of prospecting, and maybe do a bit more sustained field work at a few sites I've mostly skirmished in the past. Overall, though, I anticipate a closer relationship with researchers this year -- less in the display case, and more in the repositories.

- Prospecting for ammonite sites (and other fossils, of course) in the southern Kainach Gosau.

- Looking for some obscure ore deposits and possible other mineral stuff on the Koralpe mountains.

- Some unexpected trips and areas?

- Already had a successful prospecting trip to a miocene freshwater limestone occurrence with leaf fossils last Sunday. Plant fossils mentioned in literature, but nobody seems to have it checked out yet. Found some leaves, site already finished for me (big site with lots of rocks, though), little report for next "Steirischer Mineralog" also nearly finished. Seems to be a good year until now ;).

Congratulations!
This makes me a little bit nervous, going back to the Turonian jet area in northern Styria and southern Upper Austria. Amber up to 3 cm in size is mentioned in the internet from that area, but nothing really published. Would be veeeeery nice to find some myself and write a report! But its a rather long drive for me, nearly 2 hours one direction and I can not stay overnight. Under this conditions, serious prospecting is not really possible there.

Probably to find dinosaur or mosasaur material :fingerscrossed: as very few have been found in my state and only one species has been named and it’s a nomen dubium. Yet there are plenty of fossiliferous Cretaceous and Mesozoic sites so I’ll have to do a bit of exploration! Another is to donate at least one scientifically significant  specimen from my area to the museum .

Mostly finishing some papers. I have one big field trip planned (Brazil) and one smaller one in the early stages of planning (Alberta). I have my hit list for each but a lot of that is luck.

I've also got a pile of Mazon concretions to process so that's also gotta happen this year.

I'm staying relatively non-specific, and if something amazing happens I'll just say that was a goal I didn't know about yet. ;) I'd like to explore some of the collecting sites near me that I haven't visited yet and find a nice-yet-affordable example of at least one dinosaur, plesiosaur, pterosaur, or non-Igdamanosaurus-type mosasaur tooth from the Morocco phosphate deposits (building a little representative set). Other than that... who knows!

Just crossing my fingers to check off some bucket list finds I have in general :fingerscrossed:. I would specifically like to find associated Ptychodus material, and also another occurrence of Ptychodus rugosus in Texas. Really understanding the texas Maastrichtian and finding Globidens and Prognathodon materiel is also a big goal.

I've also been doing research on Hadrodus, and the paper I've been working on has had a couple forced resets due to new and often not yet documented info. Not to mention that Hadrodus is also a much more complex fish than I ever anticipated .  Hoping I can finish it up this year.

I actually have three but the likelyhood of my accomplishing any of them are miniscule.

1) hunt in the wrf for my own specimans to prep. ( implausable due to health, time, finance, limitations)

2 prep a full oreodont skeleton. ( implausable due to finince limitations)

3) add a nanotyrannosaurus tooth to my collection. ( implausable due to finances)

They won’t happen but it’s still good to have goals! LOL!

During 2022 all my fossil activities basically came to a stop (well, being a father is ultra bussy lol). I just realised my last post here was in December 2021 even though I visited TFF occasionally. Also didnt buy any fossils or did any digging.. The only thing I did in 2022 was visiting the Munich Show but thats just it.

For this year I hopefully have more time for buying some quality theropod teeth and go at least once digging in Holzmaden or Solnhofen. And of course be more active here again. :)

Yep, that is a big one for me.

But I would also love to add a few new species to my current list.

I need to catch up on some(a lot!) cataloging.

I like seeing some scientific goals in the above replies !!

Getting back to educating kids about sharks is goal #1. Between his school schedule and my job, which is very different than my former gig at the museum, it’ll be hard but we think we can do a few programs this year.

I’d also say more shark teeth is a goal lol

Well, this is not always in our own hands. Not many of us are scientists and even then!

For me, last May, 2022, I discovered a good leaf site in the Kainach Gosau. My fossil friend was excited, collected mostly in the debris, photographed everything and contacted an European Upper Cretaceous plant specialist. This scientist was also excited, stating, that the paper is nearly finished with all that good pics my fossil friend took. But how long it will really take? Nobody knows. Its not in my hands anymore.

I am glad, that the story about the marine macrofossils of the northern Kainach Gosau has been printed in a local journal in December 2022, summing up three years of prospecting and field work. Now it can be used for reference in the future.

Inspired by the fact that I'm starting to get into talks with a paleontology professor at my university, getting completely immersed academically in the field. I haven't had much of a chance until now, but I asked my current geology professor about it and he's helped me get in touch with the paleontologist on campus. Hopefully this means I'll be able to get actual experience in the scientific field beyond just me going on fossil hunts.

Really exciting stuff for me.

I've had a similar issue, largely due to the constraints of university being a huge time commitment. It's been a few months since I've gotten a good fossil hunt in and I've been itching to get back out there for a while, especially to get my 3rd swing at the new Conasauga fm. site I found out about with the Paleontology Association of Georgia.

Brazil trip was successful and I turned up one of the beasts on my hit list. The best find of the trip showed up a couple days after I left, but I'll get a look at that next time I'm down there. Pretty happy about all of it. Stay tuned for cool research!

Now time to put that luck to work in Alberta!

And I seem to have started collecting Graptolites as a group to focus on
