I'm thinking it's some sort of volcanic rock and not a fossil. I might be wrong though, more photos + location of where it was found would be useful. Thanks

It was found plainly visible on the ground in a back yard in Eagle, Wisconsin. It looks similar on all sides, it's roundish, and it has a diameter of about 4".

I followed up on the notion that this could be some sort of volcanic rock. After viewing very many images of, and reading about, large pumice rock, I have little doubt that this is one that was probably used for landscaping, which could very well explain why it was plainly visible on the ground. So, nope, neither a sponge nor a coral fossil, just a large run-of-the-mill pumice rock. Still looks pretty cool, though—and I'll be incorporating it into a bit of illuminated landscaping art!
