NE Kansas
Found this in NE Kansas while hiking. For a while I thought it could be some type of corral or sponge. But someone mentioned it could be a meteor. it does seem heavier than a rock. IMG_5027.MOV IMG_5029.MOV Any thoughts or tips?
ClearLake
It’s been a long time since I took Mineralogy, but to me this looks like it could be limonite, which is an iron based mineral with a characteristic yellow-brown streak (scratch it on some ceramic plate). I googled limonite and Kansas and found this: Much of the limonite in Kansas is in the form of concretions (particularly in the Dakota Formation) and in the form of impurities in sedimentary rocks. Limonite which has taken the place of and which has kept the crystal form of pyrite (a pseudomorph after pyrite) has been reported from northeast of Lincolnville in Marion County.
Tidgy's Dad
I think limonite is a good possibility. A meteor is a meteoroid that enters the Earth's atmosphere. They usually burn up and are known as 'shooting stars'. Any remnant that hits the Earth's surface is a meteorite. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend. connorp
Whatever it is, it is certainly not a meteorite.
