Mahnmut
Hello together, I just acquired some little bone and tooth(?) fragments from the rhaetian bonebed near Bebenhausen. Whoever collected them in the seventies wrote "Psephosaurus?, Schmidt page 411" on the label. I think that was rather wishful thinking. There are some bowl-shaped elements of 3-5 mm with a concave side that may show enamel. I tend to think those are some kind of fish teeth, Who can tell me more? Coco
I don’t know what it is, but I don’t think it’s otoliths. Coco Are you talking about the buttonlike shiny things? (first pic, closeup inthe small pics) there seem to be a lot of different fragments, but those caught my attention. Sorry, I did number the pics, but just realize I uploaded the version without numbers. Coco
Yes, I think what may have been taken for otolites are the relatively round shapes on the 1st photo. That said, I would like to see more closely and better lit the object located on the 2nd line of the 1st photo, located between 13 and 14 of the rule. Mahnmut
I have them here, its just that the the seller took really good macro-fotos, I cannot easily take better ones. The last two pics show one of the "buttons" that is perhaps 4 mm across, see first pic of the thread. The biggest piece (bone fragment?) of the whole collection is slightly longer than 1 cm. I looked at @Coco s collection of otoliths, most are much more complex in shape, beautiful!. Here is a thread about what turned out to be probably otoliths: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/52377-permian-otoliths-scale-or-thingy/ Similar at least. As much as I would like this to be some reptile armor or teeth, otoliths look plausible... Tiny gastropod opercula was another idea, no spiral visible though?? Open for more suggestions!
