Peace River, January 16th

So finally getting around to posting my finds from my last trip 2 weeks ago. All of this comes from a 12 foot by 8 foot section of gravel, which is… pretty mind blowing to me.

To start off the finds… Tortoise! I grabbed 1 chunk of shell - there were multiple others that were equally as big and I just didn’t have the room for all of them. Found 30 tortoise spurs and 2 claws as well:

(Also included with the claws are an earbone and a deer distal phalanx/claw core)

Next up… 9 Glyptodon osteoderms, including 1 spike osteoderm and 2 juvenile osteoderms:

Other armadillo stuff - 1 Holmesina sp. osteoderm, 1 P. Leiseyi, and 6 D. Bellus:

I'd say so! :default_faint:

If you have articulating pieces of tortoise shell Jason at the FLMNH might like to know about this. ;)

Cheers.

I'm not entirely sure if they're articulated - I'll have to head back out there and grab them and find out. I did only grab the one piece, but I'd be more than happy to share em!

Some really great finds! I love all the mammal teeth and jaw sections, and the large armadillo osteoderm. I was bummed I wasn’t able to hunt the Peace River while I was in the area in December, but I’m excited to come back down! Hopefully I’ll have trips have as successful as you!

The mammal teeth are definitely my fav finds at this point! And with what Ian seems to have done to the rivers… I think you’ll find yourself with quite a few goodies when you do hunt again!

If you get back there soon (and why wouldn't you revisit that honey hole?) you might bring a bucket. ;)

Cheers.

That spot was one I had to walk to - so I really only had my backpack - hands occupied with my shovel and sifter and probe. I'll have to bring a bigger backpack!

Might be worth the extra effort if these finds evolve into an associated set of pieces. :)

Just a little blood, sweat and tears for science. :P

Cheers.

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

Daniel- You found a great honey hole. Shark teeth are okay, but I would rather find all of the other pieces that you found. And yes, go back and grab those other pieces, they may fit together.

I really will have to, especially just to keep searching it for more stuff!
