Theft of a Spinosaurus Hand Claw from Tucson Show

Troodon

Recommended Posts

I just want to let everyone know that there appears to have been a theft of a big and beautiful Spinosaurus Hand Claw at the Tucson Show.

Would like everyone to be on the alert if they see one offered for sale.

Thanks

@Troodon Well, this truly stinks. As for why someone would think stealing a Spinosaurus hand claw is good idea, I'm baffled.

Why...just....why!?!

@Troodon Were there any security cameras at the event that could've caught the thief? If so, it could help identify the specimens whereabouts.

Happened last year to another dealer

@Troodon Also, how was someone able to steal the hand claw in the first place? Spinosaurus fossils are not that common at all - for something like that, I'd except it to be held in nothing else than a locked steel case for transport!

@Troodon How quickly were they able to re-retrieve the fossil in that case?

Last year they were able to find it within a few days.  Person tried to sell it.

Easy just pick it up and leave.  You have to understand the environment, very small isles with dozens of buyers,  material is out to be examined, very hectic place.  It should have been kept in a more secure place, looks like it was not.  Look there are police at every venue because this is common place occurrence especially with gems and jewelry

@Troodon True. Hopefully they'll be able to be just as quick this time at re-retrieving the specimen!

Nope, not sure this one will surface anytime soon.  Most likely taken by a collector not someone looking for a fast buck..

I mean, I'm greedy, I'm acquisitive, I want every fossil species, particularly brachiopod species, on Earth, but I just couldn't.

What is wrong with these people?

I couldn't imagine coveting a piece so much that I'd bring myself to steal it. Hopefully the claw makes it back undamaged to its rightful owner.

Come to think of it, one has never heard of a major brachiopod theft.

I think this shows that in general brachiopod collectors are more honest than some dinosaur collectors. Jester.gif.5e036c88faad5a4e20b451b15e16db2d.gif

Isn’t that the plot to Oceans 14, 15, 16 or whatever number they are up to now. A great brachiopod heist??

@Tidgy's Dad Yeah, I mean if they were so determined to get a spinosaurus hand claw, they didn't need to resort to stealing - the fossil areas where Spinosaurus has been found in Egypt and Morocco are pretty well known by this point. They could've just booked a flight and find a specimen for themselves.

Hmmm.

If only it were that easy.

It's much cheaper and easier for some folk just to take what others have already done the hard graft for their items.

I think dino material must be more "sexy" than brachiopods :eyeroll:

If I was dictator, two things would change.  First, I would be able to fossil hunt where ever I wish.  and two, there would be lots of rope for thieves!   I really do hope he gets his claw back.
