Fossils for unprepared material

Hello all

I recently got permission from my family to build a preparation room, so I'm getting some tools to finally start preparing fossils. I've got a few fossils from my own hunts that I can start practicing on, but those are all in extremely hard, sticky rocks, and often badly preserved.

I would however like to get some fossils from other locations to practice different techniques, mainly with air abrasion and to get a feel with the preparation of a wild variation of fossils. I picked some fossils (mainly from the USA), that aren't too complex I think, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

- Flexicalymene or other trilobites from that are fit to prep with a combination of air abrasion and scribes, preferably some from Ohio, New York, since I think those rocks aren't too hard?

- 18 inch Green River fish

- White River formation fossils

- Hell Creek/Lance... bones, not sure how hard these are, but stuff like this really interests me.

I would prefer a couple of partials/broken specimens to practice on, and then a few nice ones to prepare after some first practice.

Here are some things I'm offering in return. I will/can probably offer more, but here is at least some of the stuff I can trade.

1: Big (30 cm) vertebra from the Ouled Abdoun location in Morocco. 2 small parts glued back

2: Rooted Carcharodontosaurid tooth from the Kem Kem beds in Morocco, just shy of 10 cm (4 inch). Looks all natural to me.

3: Chilotherium jaw with associated 'tusk'.

4: Chemically prepared Keichousaurus. Very large one (skeleton measures over 30 cm). Slab looks unbroken and all natural.

Hope someone can help me:)

Are you looking for Trilos from morocco, too? Have (let me search...) a full box of Trilos from there. Spiny and not spiny, some are complete, some not. Really not the best of the best..., but some could be nice. Plus a Drotops armatus (partly prepared) and a Walliserops

I'm open to all suggestions, so yeah I'm interested. These are just really hard rocks in general, hence why I would also like some softer rocks, but maybe I got enough trade material for a bit of variation. Could you PM me some pictures and info about them?

Hi Tihjs, do you always have the ammonite of the cap-blanc nez i proposed to buy you ?

You wanted to break the block before because it was big.

Yes, I still have that one. Once the scribes arrive, I'll try to cut that one down to a size that's easier to post.

Unfortunately I can't really afford postage to Belgium right now - but hopefully that'll change in the near future and if you're interested I have an oreodont skull (White River) in its matrix. It was delivered to me in a couple parts but I superglued those parts together (would be easy to pull them apart with acetone if you wanted to work on each part separately). I don't know how much of the skull is in there and I can take better pics later - but I feel like it'd be pretty substantial from what I can see. I also feel like this would be a fairly challenging project though and might want to be something you'd tackle after a bit of practice on other pieces. I'm willing to trade down the road when I can afford postage if you're interested!

@GarethGP nice skull! It should be a cool prep!

For sure! By your profile pic, do you have a lot of experience with White River prep? I took a bunch more pics of the skull - a couple teeth are missing and I can see bits of separated bone in the matrix - I can also tell that there's definitely more hidden in the matrix. I was wondering if you had an idea how complete this skull looks like it might be, or how together it looks - or is that just sort of a lottery and you cross your fingers you get something good underneath? I don't want to give something deceptive to gigantoraptor or super complex if he wishes to eventually trade for it. Thoughts?

I’ve had a little experience. I’ve prepped 17 oreodont skulls and have 5 more on my prep shelves waiting their turn…We should probably discuss this over p.m. so we dont hyjack gigantiraptors thread. I’m at work right now. I will message you when i get off in a bit. I suspect it is a merycoidodon gracilis oreodont.

edit: just so everyone knows buying unprepped fossils are always a risk. You never know what you’re going to get. I’m using “signposts” and past experience to givenhim the best estimate of completeness i can…. And I am not trying to snipe this piece…..
