Petrified Wood with what looks to be cuts in it

I found this beautiful piece today along the Arkansas River bank in Colorado. I have a few other pieces of petrified wood but this is the largest that I've found and it almost looks to have been cut with something before hardening. Just curious if this is usual. The cuts are not very deep and I've tried to get the best pictures I can of them.

For the petrified palm wood that I have seen, yes...great piece you've got there. I once found a small, highly detailed piece that was well agatized and took a great polish. I need to see if I can dig that up...it was pretty cool.

There are many processes that can contribute to the surface texture and the "cut" marks appearance. Weathering of the wood before and after fossilizing and geologic stresses can case some or all of the features in question.
