Petrified wood?

I dont think its fossil wood, it may possibly be coral sections running through an eroded limestone section. There are some real experts here who will elucidate further.

Has a geologic look to me but I'm in no way qualified to make pronouncements about welsh rocks as I have zero experience. Might be useful to narrow down the geologic age of where this item was found. If it turns out to be from a time long before there were plants on land then that would provide some insight into the possibilities. Check out the top map on this link. See if you can zoom in and using the color key determine the age of the surface formations approximately where this item was found.

Really pretty rock that I certainly would have stooped over to pick up. If it does turn out to be geologic (as opposed to biologic) in origin it still has a lovely pattern to it. Would look really cool chunked into smaller pieces and tossed into a rock tumbler to polish up. ;)

Cheers.
