Yoda
So I went to see a client of mine this morning in a town I haven’t been to before There was a crystal shop which I popped in to They had this piece of banded iron formation (approx 5cm across). But she didn’t know where it was collected from. Anyone have any idea ? @MarcoSr, @Wrangellian ??? MotM August 2023 - Eclectic Collector
rocket
are you sure this is BIF or a stone with lovely bands of different limonit in it? Does it reflect or shine when you turn it?

MarcoSr
Banded iron has many different forms and is found worldwide. I don't recognize your piece. Wrangellian
I have the same questions. Is it heavy? It looks more like what's called 'picture rock' over here, which I'm not exactly sure what it is but it's not BIF.
Yoda
There hasn't been much prep to it. Just a light polishing It looks similar to Sample D in Marco's chart ?? Which seems to be one of the Australian locations. MotM August 2023 - Eclectic Collector

MarcoSr
Picture jasper, a form of Brown Jasper with different shades of brown and with some blue, black, tan, or ivory shades, is an opaque stone of the microcrystalline Quartz variety with extraordinary banding or veining which is created by silicate or petrified mud. Picture Jasper’s remarkable colors are because of its high iron content and the level of minerals and impurities present in the stone. It is very rare and formed in extremely ancient volcanic ash beds that date back to the Upper Cretaceous period, around 100 million years ago. It can be found in only one location in the world, multiple sites along the Muddy River in the desert of Jasper County, South Dakota. See the below picture as an example. Your piece could be picture jasper. Marco Sr. 1 "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." I agree that this piece from Morocco does not resemble your piece at all. Banded iron has lots of different forms worldwide and your piece could be one of the forms that isn't sold much in the rock and mineral markets. MarcoSr
I sent the picture of your piece to a fossil/rock dealer who has been the largest US seller of stromatolites/oncolites/microbialites etc. for years and asked for his opinion on an ID. I'll post his opinion after I receive it. Marco Sr. "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." MarcoSr
Dan responded back: "First would be picture jasper but some of the picture jaspers from Europe and the British Isles are banded chert. I would lean to picture jasper of some sort. In any case, it can be considered a microbialite............................." Dan then references a new book (see picture) on rock types that the author feels are biogenic in origin that covers cherts and picture jaspers with an entire section that deals with them. I am not sure if this was collected locally, or not. Think I will just label it as indet MotM August 2023 - Eclectic Collector

More expensive for me because of the very high shipping cost from Spain to the US. If you decide to wait to purchase it, I'll let you know after I have some time to look over my copy after receiving it, if it was worth the money. Dan said he has spent many worthwhile hours reading it. He also stated in several e-mails: "A very large monograph with superb diagrams and pictures. ............... He is very good and covers many categories of rock types and minerals that he feels are biogenic in origin. I highly recommend this book.........." Would regret not, and am sure it will go out of print quickly The line highlighted in green is what worries me! That line actually bothered me also as I worry I'll feel the need to buy a whole bunch of new biogenic type specimens. I am already thinking about buying a piece of that Moroccan jasper that you posted above. Marco Sr. 1 "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day."
