Peace River Diving Trips - February 24th/25th

Recommended Posts

So had a couple VERY productive diving days towards the end of last month, and I’m finally getting around to posting. Went out with a couple of off-forum friends.

So I’ll post the finds, and then a little story at the end with the best find.

Starting off with teeth - Paramylodon harlani M2, dire wolf canine tip, beaver molar, 2 capybara molar chunks, a partial tapir tooth, 2 raccoon jaws, one with a tooth:AA25DCFB-EB4B-4ECA-B9F4-494C048BDCCC.thumb.jpeg.7cb31554636762ac3c87bb90c293e86c.jpeg

Bison premolar, camelid premolar, tapir incisor, partial Dugong tooth, dolphin tooth, and a modern (ish) pig symphysis with an unerupted canine:

All my horse stuff, including a thoracic vert, proximal phalanx, astragalus, a carpal/tarsal, 2 incisors, 2 upper teeth, and 3 lower teeth:

Bison proximal and medial phalanx, and a bison scapula:

Gator stuff - 2 verts, 7 large teeth, 5 scutes including one MASSIVE one:

Deer stuff, including multiple big chunks of antler, an astragalus, a proximal and a distal phalanx, many teeth (2 premolars, and my first incisor!):

All my Glyptodon and Holmesina osteoderms:

And finally before the big reveal… here’s some big tusk chunks, including the tip of a tusk:

….WHICH WE FOUND MOST OF THE REST OF!

It has since been consolidated and preserved and put back together - coming an inch shy of 5 feet! Going back out this weekend and you can bet there’s gonna be much more to come.

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

Excellent finds, congrats. That’s the most glyptodont osteoderms I think I’ve seen in one day :thumbsu:ashamed ivory is so fragile. I found a large tusk a few years ago but unfortunately it was in a million pieces

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

Thank you! It was over 2 trips - but yeah, I found a whole bunch of glyptos. It was great. We got the tusk consolidated and put back together though, sans tip, with minimal losses, thank god. The tip for whatever reason hasn't flaked at all. I'll be consolidating it still, but it doesn't strictly need it.

Beautiful tusk! Hopefully I can find one like that one day!

This is the second one I’ve been around when it’s been found - the first I’ve actually found. They’re absolutely out there!

Thank you! The tusk was awesome - but I think the sloth tooth was my personal fav, just cause it was my first one I’ve found, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. That, or the associated bison toes. Almost articulated - but they’re from opposite digits.

Would love to see the tusk when finished and the entire story behind it.

I totally thought I had posted it - but apparently not! There’s not toooooo much of a story there - one of my buddies saw it poking out, about ~7 feet deep, we started excavating it, I uncovered the second chunk as we were excavating the first. They had fallen in a “V” shape interestingly enough! Got em zip tied, took em back out to the boat!

All finished up:

Maybe i missed the post?  and how in the world did you just happen to have zip ties with you?  Or have you run across this problem before

Nope I apparently typed out the original bit in my first topic up top, and then forgot to edit it in. Oops.

We’ve run into the issue before. Zip ties have become a staple now since I’ve learned just how fragile tusk is when it’s out of the water.
