Possible Molar

Aracelli

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I found this bone on the Gulf of Mexico, near Gasparilla island amongst some shells on the beach. It is white and smooth and I think it might be a molar, but to what? A manatee? A dolphin? I think it's pretty recent its white and sun bleached. Thanks for your help!

It does not look like a tooth to me for multiple reasons.  However it does look like a phlange, a finger or toe bone.  My first question is whether bit is fossilized.  Have you done a burn test

Hi everyone! Thank you for your help! I know absolutely nothing about fossils and bones except that I'd found one. I really appreciate it. I understand now that it probably isn't a molar (no roots). It was just odd that the one surface had grooves which I thought of as possible grinding area of a tooth. And it feels light, more like a bone than a tooth too. I'm not sure how to do a burn test. It does look VERY similar to the picture posted of the phalanges. Any idea what kind of animal it's from? Thank you all!

@Aracelli

I believe Harry is indicating this is cow or bison.
For a burn test, hold a match or lighter to the item. If it discolors, or starts to smell of burnt hair, then it is modern bone.

If no affect - it is likely a fossil.
