Partial Ammonite? South TX Find

Retired ATC

Recommended Posts

Greetings, hillside find walking trails.

Location: Far west San Antonio, TX

Construction in the local area appears to have cracked this item. Other fossilized oysters and echinoids were found nearby.

Nice find! Yes indeed...it is a partial ammonite. Those "indentations" are a good indication as they are part of the internal chambers of the ammonite.

Thank you!  Will keep my eyes open for more!

I can’t help you.

Putting a ruler is good, very good even, but putting it in cm or inches is even better ! :) :Wink1:

I agree, but I do at least think its in inches here, because each unit is divided into 8 subunits, not ten. the two sides are only offset against each other, but same unit. having "inches" written there would of course make it even clearer.

On the ammonite: Something like Placenticeras?

Hi,

@MahnmutThe 8 subunits are the small points in the squares ? I find it hard to see them separated. ? I find it hard to see them separated.

Hi Coco,

when you look at the squares its four units between the numbers, each further divided in two by the dotted lines, you do not need to count the single dots, although they may signify 16th parts, as Inches are usually divided in 2/4/8/16 parts.

What do the ammonite people say, am I close with Placenticeras? Or should have a sharper keel then?

Best Regards,

J
