Impossible bone?

A friend asked me to look at this fossil he discovered at the base of a limestone bluff in NE Iowa it is a Native American winter camp and cave complex.  Have found trilobite and marine fossils in the area.  It looks remarkably like a tall molar or short  bone but a couple hundred million years too old.  Does anybody recognize this?  My best guess is that is a stalk of a plant precursor?

Hi wi_nerd and welcome to the forum.

To me it looks as if the segment below the arrow was part of a structure that goes on to the left of the pic. COuld be a burrow infill or other trace fossil?

Best Regards,

J

Ichnofossil for me. Not seeing bone texture or morphology.

The location that the specimen was found in eliminates the likelihood of bone or plant. The bluff country of NE Iowa is mostly Ordovician when the sea covered the landscape and boney animals did not exist. Trace fossils are common here and I agree with the other forum member's suggestions.
