Fossils from the Santa Fe river

Recommended Posts

I apologize for the in hand photos, but I was getting the best lighting here and I believe if they are identifiable at all these photos will be okay. I found these all snorkeling in the Santa Fe river in north Florida the other day! My guesses are as follows:

A - turtle?

B - some type of ankle bone?

C - mammal tooth

D - really not sure but it looks like a socket from some large mammal maybe

E - really not much to go off here for me personally, it was just such a large bone chunk that I had to take. Would be very interested if anyone has any guesses!

A - turtle?  Fish jaw ,  but whose ??

B - some type of ankle bone? Distal end of a Cannon bone...

C - mammal tooth  It is a premolar,  Might be Bison/Cow

This is a cow jaw... Bison and cow have VERY similar teeth.   Look at 3rd from right... Your seems to be fossilized which would mean Bison...lower premolars | Cow | John Rochester | Flickr

D - really not sure but it looks like a socket from some large mammal maybe.  Not sure, hopefully someone else will guess.

E - really not much to go off here for me personally, it was just such a large bone chunk that I had to take. Would be very interested if anyone has any guesses!

I think it is a jaw bone,  paying attention to the holes

Please add measurements....

For the Fish Jaw,  I found this one,IMG_3500text.jpg.6623578d5f1f092867582a173c31ba97.jpg

Then at the same spot 3 months later,  this tooth,

and then soon after, it was Identified as Alligator Gar

Thanks for all the help! I think you’re spot on about the jaw bone and the cannon bone. I suppose there would be no way to guess what this cannon bone went to from this fragment alone?

I don't see a cannon bone.  "B" appears to me to be the distal end of a bovid toe bone.1640398954_bisonbosmedialphalanx.thumb.jpg.b95cfbaff5c583432b6d783f12f5f7e3.jpg

Here are some additional photos which may help identify it as either the distal end of a cannon bone or a bovid toe bone. I think it looks very similar to both! If these make anything appear more obvious let me know.

Let me try to clarify,

You are new to this hobby. I have been doing it 15 years..  I quickly realized that you can not cover everything.. So, I intentionally avoided getting smarter on any fossils outside Florida, and I decided NOT to specialize on bones, especially comparing the same bone across animals....I tend to throw non_perfect bones away.

I went hunting today. I saw all sorts of Bones and threw most of them away... Here is a non_perfect Cannon bone.. I kept it because of you... I kept it because , to me, identifying your B as a Cannon Bone was not completely foolish. IMG_0281Cannon1.thumb.jpg.0bb9d35e536a9af9d0d9679461db6fae.jpgIMG_0283Cannon2.thumb.jpg.cf5fb1ff831693d816552a1cf31825ec.jpgIMG_0285cannon.thumb.jpg.4382b3a9eb61d41be56039cd8ffd60fc.jpgIMG_0286Cannon4.thumb.jpg.e45f4a52268323503563b4c01e04276c.jpg

So, me replying "Cannon bone",  stretches my capabilities.    What about Harry ?? He has a massive comparative collections on mostly perfect Florida Fossil Bones...He is about the best we have on Florida bone Identification, If Harry says Toe Bone,  I would tend to believe it.

Plus on your photo... Do you see that raise line on the edge closest to right side,  screams TOE,  not Cannon

A side note... This "Cannon bone" i found yesterday,  I strongly believe comes from a Horse, a little small at 45 mm wide, but still Equus .sp

You are absolutely correct, I am quite new to this hobby and just trying to learn everything I can! I do throw out most bone fragments, however when I find one that appears slightly distinct (such as the bone above), or if I think a more experienced individual may be able to identify it, I will often keep it. If I am able to get an ID on it, I am always excited to add it to my mental database. Also, cool horse bone! I appreciate seeing the example.

I disagree . . . your bone scrap doesn't at all resemble a cannon bone.  Shellseeker has eliminated Equus as a source of your find, so let me try to eliminate other sources of appropriate size;
