Member of the Month - May 2023 - Fin Lover!

Recommended Posts

Well, here we are, already into the month of May. Wasn't it just Christmas?!?!?! :headscratch:

Flowers are blooming, and spring showers are dampening our fossil hunts. But, all is good.

Weather is warming, and days are getting longer. We are heading into real fossil hunting season, here in the North East US.

And the change of month brings a change of the Member of the Month.

We bid farewell to last months crown bearer, and say hello to this month's winner.

By unanimous staff vote, we crown this month's winner ...

Fin Lover joined us just over one year ago, but has come a long way from where she started.

Inquisitive, and always ready to learn, she has learned quite a bit in the year she has been here already.

Welcoming and warm, always willing to discuss finds or investigate possible ID's, she is a new member who imbues all that the Forum appreciates.

Thank you, @Fin Lover , for all you contribute here. The Forum is a better place with you here.

Please let us know how you came to the hobby and to the Forum, if you would!
Keep up the great work!!

Oh, wow, that is a surprise!  Thank you so much for the kind words!  I know I still have so much to learn here.

My story isn't the typical "kid who loved dinosaurs" story.  In fact, I never even made it all the way through Jurassic Park.  I went to the beach as a kid, but I don't think I ever looked for or found a shark's tooth.

My husband of 20 years has always been somewhat into fossils (very small collection), so I would occasionally buy him a fossil for holidays (usually some sort of plant fossil because I liked them best).  We collected some petrified wood in Kentucky for use in his fish tanks, but I think that's the only fossil I had found before moving to South Carolina.

About a year and a half ago, my husband offered to take me to the beach to hunt for shark's teeth which, I have to admit, I wasn't particularly excited about, but I eventually went.  That day, we didn't find any shark teeth, but I found a perfect shark vert.  And I realized something was happening that never happens: my head was quiet...no worrying, no planning, nothing but focusing on the beach.  So, I was hooked.

I started trying my luck at creek (surface) hunting in Summerville about a year ago, and joined the forum after lurking for a month or so first.

The forum has been amazing!  I have learned so much, received much needed encouragement, and developed the desire to keep expanding my knowledge.  Thank you so much to everyone for the guidance and encouragement.  Suffering from several chronic health conditions, this hobby has given me something to look forward to and a reason to get out there and push myself.

I look forward to learning more, sharing many more finds, and hopefully encouraging someone else in return.
