Removing wax from Grallator footprint

Recommended Posts

Just received a Grallator footprint that has been enhanced with wax, which is a usual practice with these footprints. However, I'm thinking of removing the wax and bringing it back to its original state.

Does anyone know how I can remove the wax, without damaging the footprint/matrix?

If it is only wax, you might try holding it over some steam and see if that loosens the wax.

Cheers.

Sometimes they use paint but again steam will probably remove that as the pigments are most probably only on the surface, I would try this first before using acetone or similar.

Thanks guys! I managed to remove most of it with acetone and cotton swabs. Couldn't remove all of it, a very thin layer still remains, but it looks much better and natural now! :Smiling:

Personal preference I liked it before, I'm not one that needs pristine footprints.  Rather have everyone know what they are looking at,  as long as paint is not used.

That looks pretty nice to me. Is it from the south of France?

I understand, it's a personal preference. I prefer fossils to be as natural as possible with only a little bit of enhancement when needed. I don't like to turn them into something they're not.

That said, I think my 'after' picture doesn't do it justice due to the lighting. Here is a better, more representative photo of the result. As you can see there's still a thin layer of wax which enhances it just enough to make it still clearly recognizable as a footprint, but not so 'in your face' and unnatural as before.

Yes it is, don't know the exact location though.

That's a beautiful footprint and a great gift from MrsR! ;)

I don’t know, I kinda like the subtlety of your improved print. Enough to show the unaware observer what is there, but not enough to obscure the natural shape of the track
