Hi Svetlana, it's amazing how many ammonites you can find in this quarry. You also had a nice Nautilus !

And a sunny day.:D

  • Thank You 1

Wow! It's teeming!

In reality, no. This is the impression of the video and photos that were collected over several trips, but in reality it is very difficult to find a slab with ammonites; most of them are empty

Thanks for the trip report. Great finds - I like all including the crystals (magnetite?).

Why is that one ammonite green... is it covered in algae or is there a green mineral coating/replacement? Is there a lot of pyrite replacement/filling at this site generally?

It looks like you would have to do a lot of gluing to come home with anything intact (or do the gluing at home), is that the case?

Hello.
This is pyrite - such a sample was found once.
I don't see the green color on the ammonite. Sometimes, if there was a crack near the ammonite and water got inside the cast, there may be moss, etc.
In this place there are ammonites of various substitutions, but these samples are the cores of ammonites from marl. Sometimes they are covered with a crust of pyrite, which is easily washed off.

I mean this one if you're not sure:

I'm sure you've been misled by the color reproduction :)

In reality, the surface of this ammonite is more bluish-gray than green. But the observation is interesting: sometimes large ammonites are on top of this color. Only large ones - small ones did not come across.

I don't know the reason for this color. The substitution is the same - these are all ammonite nuclei replaced by marl.

Perhaps you are right, and water got into the cracks, thanks to which algae developed there.

OK. It looks green on my monitor. Inaccurate color reproduction happens sometimes, I'm not sure why.  :headscratch:

If it's not green I think we can rule out algae on this one.
