johnnyvaldez7.jv
Yesterday I went out hunting and found some neat fossils while searching a couple of gravel banks that I'm now posting to see if the ID is correct and to ask a few questions about it. The first is a horse tooth I believe might be a cheek tooth but I don't know the specifics... if it's upper or lower. Sorry it's in my hand... that was to get it closer to the light for clear images. But why does it look like you can see right thru the enamel?!?! Of all the things I've ever found... this is the most unusual thing I've ever seen. How could that happen?? The tooth is see thru. It also has an unusual bend or warp to it.

Harry Pristis
It appears to be an Equus sp. m1 from a young adult individual . I don't know what causes the translucence, but it may be impregnation by SiO2 in certain depositional environments. 5 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Rockwood
Like maybe it's been in hot water ? SiO2 is soluble in it I think.
Harry Pristis
Silica is common in most groundwater, though it is more concentrated in some areas. Florida spring water is high in dissolved silica because it passes through silica-rich limestone. 4 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest

Harry Pristis
There are no transparent teeth . . . we're talking about translucent. Stream polish may contribute to translucence. Which springs have you been hunting, Daniel? The Peace River starts off as lake water from a water treatment plant. It is augmented by runoff along the river course. The Peace River may not have a high enough SiO2 concentration to fit my speculation. Check your stream-polished fossils from that river. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
johnnyvaldez7.jv
Translucent was the word I should have used. I know you can't see completely thru the tooth...even barely. It's just Texas slang. We say funny things in our everyday sentences. Still... it's unusual as heck.
johnnyvaldez7.jv
@Harry Pristis Have you ever found any and or seen them often in your time fossil hunting and collecting?
Harry Pristis
I'm sure I have, but I just haven't inventoried those individual teeth. Yours is a keeper, no doubt, but I have many, many horse teeth. Most of the teeth from Haile 19A had translucent enamel to one degree or another. Sorry - I meant translucent! And quite a few actually - I’ve hunted the Alafia, Payne Creek, the Peace, Horse and Joshua creeks, etc. Dont think I’ve found any translucent teeth yet. Not quite, anyway. Fossils? I dig it.

Not quite, anyway. I don't know the Alafia River except by reputation . . . Did you find anything at all under all that white sand? I don't know of any springs on Payne Creek, Horse Creek, or Joshua Creek. I think of these creeks as runoff tributaries to the Peace River. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
johnnyvaldez7.jv
@Harry PristisThose are some beautiful teeth and photos! Such detail. I think this tooth from the other post has some translucent enamel. Even through the color. Edited June 5, 2023 by johnnyvaldez7.jv
