If anything it may be a trace fossil IMHO. Could also be a mineral vein or staining.

If a trace fossil, of what could it be?

Sorry, but I can't answer that. One would need to first determine if it is in fact one, then one would have to determine the exact stratigraphy in order to find out what fauna might have been burrowing through the strata at the time and even then it would be near to impossible or guess work to determine what left the trace, as is mostly the case with this fossil type.

  • I found this Informative 1
  • I Agree 2

Understood, thank you for your help.

I can see this being anything from a mud crack to a plant fossil. There really isn't enough information available at this point.

It is unfortunate that I don't have any information to share but I'm happy to share the photos and learn what I can. Thank you.

If you can learn more precisely where it was found you might be able to gather information that could be useful in identifying it.

I did just that, it was found in a dry creek bed near one of the largest open pit copper mines in the world in Hanover New Mexico. Hoping this helps.

I dare say the geology is well studied. Maybe someone will be familiar with it.

Interesting, I'm not sure I read anything about that before. Thank you.
