Meghunter.net Posted July 4, 2010 Share Posted July 4, 2010 Hi guys! I have been reading this site for quite some time but this is my first real post. Anyway, I found these two teeth off Venice. One is a normal looking mammoth tooth piece but the one on top seems very different. A few well educated people have indicated it is also just a Columbian Mammoth tooth but it looks so different I am struggling with that conclusion. I hope someone here could shed more light on this. In the picture where one tooth is on top of the other - The bottom tooth is the more common Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), the tooth on top is the older, less common Hayes mammoth (Mammuthus haroldcooki). There are several noted features to differentiate between the two species. In Florida, the Columbian mammoth (M. columbi) averages 22-25 "plates" per tooth, while the Hayes mammoth (M. haroldcooki) only averages 16-18.
