Green River Fish

Hi all, here are some of the fossil Eocene fish the wife and I found in Wyoming on our trip last month. I found 3 large skulls, but they were missing the tail end. Still they will prep out great. the whole fish are prepped to the final stage and awaiting a clear coat on the bones only. The Skull is still being prepped and will take a while.

Wat to go Troy!

Do you know the species of the skull yet?

Not sure of anything yet. Still waiting to uncover more of it, after I stabilize the exposed parts. Wished I had the whole thing, but had to take what I could get.

We found 3 large fish skulls in the float material that people had already cabbaged. I guess they took the tails and didn't look for the rest or didn't find the rest.

Outstanding, great finds and fantastic preps. Congratulations.

Thanks very much. They are very tiny detailed fish bones. Had to prep with a micro scribe.

Great Finds, Troy!

Thanks for sharing with us!

The skull looks pretty fantastic!

Great job on the prepping!

I agree with Michigan Tim, and can't wait to see it finished!

You do some great work, I've tried my hand at the whole scratch and blow technique but I'm still quite armature at it. My preps aren't near as crisp as yours.

Thanks for sharing.

That skull is looking pretty good. Hope oyu get a good skull out of it. As for the hands hurting, I have an excecise ball (hand-sized) I used for when I do a lot of prep work. squeeze it 25 times with each hand, and also a few stout rubber bands, stretch them around your fingers (second to last knuckle) and stretch oyur fingers out. It helps a bit. At least it excercises asome different hand muscles.

Sorry about not updating this till now. It kinda got swept under the rug so to speak. Still working on it, but haven't finished. I've done some more work on this, Green River Eocene fish that Delia and I found in Wyoming, that I am hand prepping out. They are 50 million years old. I believe this fish is Phareodus encaustus.  I believe I actually found the fishes lips fossilized as well. Also a photo of the tools I'm using for this prep job.

Very nice. I just posted a topic about some fish I found today. Can you share the best way to prep and seal them?

I always hand prep them a little at a time and seal them with superglue. I apply a small amount on a scribe needle and quickly allow it to absorb into the fossil, keeping it away from the matrix, so I can continue to remove with prep needle.

I used Elmer’s glue watered down and it sealed it nicely as you can see in my final piece.
