newton1
I found this fossil fish at the North Sulphur river in Texas. Does anyone know what it is? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris Edited November 28, 2010 by newton1
Foshunter
Welcome to the Forum. I have found several in the sulphur and yours are like mine--no head--no tail. Id of the middle of a fish is difficult, the people from Dallas Paleo. when they published the book on the Sulphur River, labeled them Hoplopteryx sp. from the Ozan Formation. Hope this helped, maybe someone else can help with a closer ID.--Tom Grow Old Kicking And Screaming !!"Don't Tread On Me"
Auspex
If I see teeth on the second pic (looks like the fish is folded over on itself), you might have some luck getting it IDed; could even be an important find (if all that are found are partials, an articulated head could help settle many other partial-fish mysteries). Nice find! fossiladdict
Do you see anything that might resemble fin rays at the top? Hoplopteryx's have a dorsal fin that is supported by nine unjointed bony fin rays...also what is the length of it? Very cool find Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! Makes you all giddy inside!
jpc
I know what it is... it is cool. That's all I can truly say. Auspex, I thiknk we are looking at the rims of vertebral centra on the second pix, not teeth.
newton1
Thanks everyone! I was excited to find it!! Those are the vertebrae on the back side. It's 4 1/4 inches long at the longest part. I don't see any rays on top.

Xiphactinus
very cool fish. It's preserved where you are looking at its stomach with the pelvic fins showing on either side. Kind of hard to ID from that angle. Do you have a better (closer) photo of the vertebral column?
