Wrangellian
I picked this out of a pile that the rockhounds were getting rid of.. so no data to go with it, but from my sleuthing I have narrowed it down to Conulus sp. from the Upper Chalk in England.. can anyone confirm this for me? It looks like flint and I understand these things wash out on the beaches like this. Canadian cent for size (19mm)

Bill
Yep, many species erode from the chalk, some with complete calcite test covering a flint core. The longer they're exposed, the more the calcite is eroded away leaving just the flint. Here are a few specimens of various echinoids. The ones on the left still have calcite test, (the bottom left is filled with chalk, not flint), those on the right, including the black Conulus, don't. KOF, Bill. Wrangellian
Thanks you guys. Too bad mine is missing the test, but I knew it was eroded, I guess too much to tell the species? Is there any possibility of narrowing down the location based on the color or anything? Eric
