Hello. I found this item in middle Crete island, Greece. It's of the late Miocene and measures 8 x 8 x 6,5 cm. Could it be a stromatoporoid sponge, otherwise what and what the species of???

Thanks for any help.

Are you sure that those are Miocene? Stromatoporoids range through the Cambrain-Oligocene I think (correct me if im wrong) being very abundant in the Paleozoic. I live in Silurian-Devonian age formations so I have a big collection of those spongies in a jar. The first thing I noticed were the parallel "bands" and they do look like stromatoporoids. Here are some of mine for comparison:

Hello Larsa. The same doubt had and Crinoid Queen on my former post for corals. According to all the geologic articles and books i have seen, my area is refered as late Miocene. Any way, you have already helped me a lot by the pics of your good fossils. By the way, I have to express my pleasure of seeing young people to be engaged with the fossils, wich consist the life's messages from the depth of time. i wish you to realize your aim to be a geologist. If i could turn the time back for only .... 4 decades, I would have the same desire. I wish you also to realize all the rest life plans.

Finally, I hope you to have understood my not good self learned English.

Regards

Thank you! I have wanted to be a paleontologist for a long time. I have collected since 1st grade but havnt started studying fossils until I was 16. I enjoy this site so much- I learn something and try to teach something every day! :P
