danco
I wonder if this is a petrified oak? It comes from Jasper, Texas (Oligocene, Catahoula Formation)
Carl
Can you post a much sharper photo? Looks like petrified wood but IDing it to oak will likely require an extreme close-up AND a paleobotanist...
MikeD
You really do need much clearer pictures for a good ID. I can say this particular piece is probably oak by the location you gave and the strong rays that the piece has, and my collecting experience at that location (and my paleobotanist friend has taught me to identify oak from there). Thank you Mike, at the place I found mostly similar to this, but also a few different, which I think might be conifers. I also expected to find palm tree but I was unlucky. Here I attach a close-up. And I need badly the help of your paleobotanist friend to solve another mystery for which I attach one more pic here. I wonder what kind of a plant could it be?
