Adventures In Extreme Macro With P /s Camera

Most of my recent efforts has been capturing fossil images with a DSLR type camera.... but what about the simpler point and shoot cameras......

One of the best cameras built for capturing images from telescopes and microscopes is the Vintage Nikon Cool Pix Point /Shoot Camera most versatile and are out of production.

This concept applies to family of Nikon 990, 995 and 4500 digital cameras (3-4 mega pixel).... I own several of these cameras.

I wanted to explore and push the envelope of realm of extreme macro photography..... I ponder this question for over a year now and found a neat solution which is described below...

Here is the rational.... the heart of a microscope is the microscope objective lens that is design to resolve tiny things..... the rest of the microscope supports this objective lens... so why not take a microscope objective lens and direct coupled it to the camera lens? I was able to assemble an adapter a (28mm to RMS adapter)to carry out this function but took a chance on the adapter hardware not knowing the imaging capabilities of the total system when integrate ( it could have bomb)... I am a hands on optic experimentor... and I was extremely pleased with the results..... normal microscope lens run sub $100 but can get real pricey into $1000 and beyond

The microscope objective is used high end superb 2X Apochromatic Objective infinity corrected lens which cost more than the camera.....

Area of coverage is 13mm diameter.

Thanks Tim. What I have shown here that high quality imaging can be had for a faction of a cost of professional systems costing thousands of dollars... all it takes is imagination.

Note the above pictures were taken at F5.6 .... I needed higher F stop so I had to download the camera manuals to reset the F stops....

More pic now at F10.3 with 10X Apo Lens, Nikon 995....

Much sharper...

Rather than flush mount the microscope objective to the camera lens...

The next progression is the use of custom 3" projection tube that just arrived now incorporated with 20X objective ...

Peter, that is really cool. In addition to the individual small fossils you can enlarge, I am thinking of the greater detail that could be seen on larger specimens. You could see some serious detail on echinoids with that. :)

The resolution is quite good .... and the best thing is that the focus is automatic... just point and shoot the picture. Also the degree of mechanical vibrations is less than a DSLR since there is no mirror slap that limits resolution... not bad for a 3 megapixel camera.

Half the fun is trying to innovate to get to your final results... a lot of it is just trial and error.... another must have item for macro/micro photography is the ablity of the camera to have a remote shutter... this will cut down the amount of physical mechanical vibrations....

In a pinch, you can use the shutter delay feature.
