Harry Pristis
Hello, Clem . . . The fossil I can recognize in the image is a brachiopod (maybe a Spiriferid). The matrix is almost certainly a fine-grained, indurated limestone of Paleozoic age (likely Ordovician through Devonian). I cannot say what the beach at Erie, PA, contains; but, the beach at Ashtabula, Ohio, is loaded with rock carried south by glaciers. Your specimen is at least heavily beach-polished, and may hve been bull-dozed up by a glacier originally. That is, your specimen may be an exotic Canadian fossil. Keep lookin' down! ------Harry Pristis http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
clem
Howdy Harry,,by saying the matrix is from the age you say, would it then be logical to conclude the fossil itself be of the same age....
Harry Pristis
Yes, that is safe to say. In this case, I can't pin it down closer than 355 Ma to 490 Ma (Ma = "mega-anna" = million years before present). -----Harry Pristis http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
