This kind of torpedoes the well respected and oft repeated theory that feathers are frequently fossilized as a carbonized film (rather than mere impressions) due to the presence of "bacteria". I never thought that such an exotic explanation was necessary. Looks like the melanin cells were misinterpreted as bacteria, and the researchers went looking for a phenomena to explain.
