Nice examples! How did you find those? I'd move right over them!

Have there been any pearls that have come out of the Calvert?

I didn't know that is what they looked like here, so now know

what to look for. Is there anyway you could take a pic of just

one, and lighten the pic a bit?

As most fossil hunting, its luck. You have to know where to look, but as for finding them thats luck. the largest one I found on accident. I bent down to pick up a tooth and looked between my legs and there it was. the others I just had to be close to the ground and know what to look for.

As for the ciffs, I dont think so, but im not expert to that area. I know they are found in certain formations in texas and I have seen some pics of some on here from california, and recently saw some on the net from flordia.

Roz, I will get a pic up in a min

I decided I'd add my fossil pearl as well. It was found near to where the specimens Jax has shown came from. THe only real difference is that mine is still in matrix.

I find the very idea of fossil pearls to be completely captivating.

Here's a link to a little information about them:

Thanks for the link. I'm surprised that fossilized pearls are not more common.

Does anyone have full access to this article? http://www.jstor.org/pss/2419973 It's about a pearl found in the Choptank formation in MD.

You would think it was easy to just go find more, But the formation I found these in is hard to come by. You have to get lucky when they are doing construction in that area. I know some locals that have looked for many years for one and never found one.

The other one that was pictured by Bierk, thats the one that got me started. And Im pretty sure that where he found that is pretty close to where I found the most recent one.

Here's a daydream for you; how 'bout an opalized fossil pearl?

Probably not even chemically possible, but it makes a nice musing.

Do you guys watch the show "Cash and Treasure" on the travel channel?? They had a trip on there where they were finding opals. Pretty cool stuff. Someone had a huge piece of pet. wood that was opalized. Makes you just drool.

I really love the opalized clams from Lightning Ridge (New South Wales, Australia).

I am loving those fossil pearls on here, and I am gonna to find a couple.

I have convinced myself.

I love opals too! I think that Lightning Ridge is the only place that has

black opals but I could be wrong..

If you like opalized fossils you should check out the "Virgin Rainbow", an opalized belemnite from Down Under.
