dalmanites14
Hey guys, Next summer I am traveling to France and Italy. It is a long time away from now, I thought it could build up this Post. Names of sites from either country would help. Thanks, Dalmanites14

Raff
Hello, collecting in Italy is forbiden, here is a web site where you can see most of the main locations: http://english.fossiel.net/locations/locations.php regards nala is right, in Italy, if you steal a Roman amphora, or take from the sand a fossil shell risks the same penalty, unfortunately the law is anachronistic
Procynosuchus
As Raff and Nala said, the italian law on fossils (which also regulates the archeological finds) is vague, incompetent, and has never been amended since the late sixties. Technically if you pick up even small fossis you MAY incurr in a sancion, but this usally doesn't happen, in fact there is plenty of famous fossil sites that are always full of collectors (like the Furlo's gully, or the clays near Siena). I have myself collected fossil shells, plants and fishes in various localities and never had problems. Unless you find something of huge scientific interest, you don't risk anything. Instead you are going to have problems if you try to steal something from explicitly forbidden sites (Bolca, Pietraroja, Besano, just to name a few). In brief, don't be too worried to pick up some rocks when you're in Italy, just be very careful to the off-limits localities (they're not many), and if possible ask permission when you're seeking on a private property. Last, if you are familar whit geological maps, on this sites you will find all the geologic information you need about italian territory. http://www.isprambiente.gov.it/site/en-GB/Cartography/Geological_and_geothematic_maps/default.html http://www.egeo.unisi.it/
