Endocranial Cavity.. Pennsylvanian Age Fish

Roz

Recommended Posts

I found an interesting fish nodule that I found several weeks
after I found the brain endocast.. To make a long story short,
it ended up at the AMNH (American Museum of Natural History)
for a CAT scan.. The first image was just emailed to me and I
received permission to use it to share on the forum.. There
will be more images later..

Here is some of what was said in the email...
"Here is the dorsal view of the 3D reconstruction of the osteichthyan braincase from Texas (arrow indicates what we thought to be the brain). This is an early result and I will improve the reconstruction later. Nevertheless, it is already enough to see that...unfortunately no brain is preserved. What we thought to be a brain is actually the external surface of the right dorsal part of the endocracranial cavity..
However, the braincase and the endocranial cavity are quite well preserved in 3D, so this specimen will certainly provide good results concerning the internal and external anatomy of this fish".

First pic is the fish nodule I found.. It was the size of a nickel
(larger than a penny). Sorry I didn't take the original pic with
a good indicator of size.. Second Pic is the CAT scan image..

Wow; you had a fossil CT scanned at the American Museum of Natural History!

How cool is that?!

Thanks, Carmine.. Well they were hoping the brain was intact and so was I but still very happy
of what it does show.. They are studying sharks right now. This is my first fossil that had a scan
and I can't tell you how excited I am to look at that image!

Amazing!!! Wish I could some of my nodules CAT scanned ;)

If you find any that you think might look promising maybe you could post

them and then go from there.. I am lucky it was partially opened or

I would have not recognized anything to do with fish..
