Looking For Small Teeth

Recommended Posts

I went to the Peace for the 5th time in the last 8 days. This time with friends who were really only looking for small shark teeth around 1/2 inch. We went to an area known for lots of small teeth and we all found many Bulls, Hemis, Lemons, and Tigers around that size.

I found some gravel and was digging deep -- first I found some nice sized lower snaggles, then a couple of osteoderns (2 Armadillo and 1 Glyptodont), then the biggest , nicest Meg I have ever found, then a much smaller posterior meg, another lower snaggle, and a nice mako. After about 90 minutes, I could not dig deeper without drowning, and went back to find small shark teeth.

I dug other nearby holes, but without a similar result. Good things happen when/where you least expect it.

Traveling to Thanksgiving dinner in the morning, but wanted to share my joy!!!! :P Happy Thanksgiving to all -- enjoy your families and friends. SS

I also found a fossilized toe bone -- added here to see if someone can ID..

Great finds, especially that meg! Will it replace your avatar?

The Meg amazes me. It is approx 2 mya and has been laying protected somewhere to be in such great shape. It could not have bounced around the river or just eroded by the water (I have seen those results). Then today I dig down 20-30 inches below the current river bed and out it comes -- almost perfect. Odds against must be astronomical.

I think I will replace my Avatar -- after Thanksgiving. I have to pack now for the trip... SS

Great day on the river. This, and the Orange Tree in my backyard, are really the only things I miss about Florida. There is just nothing, to me anyway, that can beat a weekend <or longer when possible> camping on the shore near the "dig site." That is a really nice Meg, from the condition I'd say it had not weathered out from the bank all that long ago, congratulations. It's also as big a one as I've seen from the Peace... I think this is because Florida was a real shallow sea while places like South Carolina were deeper so could support the bigger fish.

The toe bone... whatever it is, it has be be an animal with some size... so I googled Sloth and Mammoth, Sloth I'd say definitely not but the picture I found of a set of Mammoth toe bones lookes possible. Now I'll wait until someone who is better than me at IDing weighs in so see if I'm right or not...

Thanks for comments Lloyd. Like you I am a transplant , only in the opposite direction. I grew up in Connecticut, had a job in Poughkeepsie, followed the job to Florida in 1988, and Austin in 1996.

Never even though about fossils until after I returned to Florida in 2001, and did not get serious until 2009. Now it consumes my free time. The next best thing to FINDING fossils in the Peace River with friends and sunshine is NOT finding fossils while searching for them in the Peace River with friends and sunshine.

I know you share the sentiment. I am at peace with the world, sifting thru gravel with the current flowing by, the sun shining, and a wide diversity of animal life passing by my location.

I certainly could --- the serrations are sharp --

I was 10 feet from my constant fossil buddy. He took almost as much joy in finding the Meg as I did. He is a class act and I will try to emulate him when the shoe is on the other foot... I am persistent, and I have strategies, but finding Megs this size on the Peace River is uncommon, and I have never seen/heard of one over 3.8 inches coming from the Peace. As Lloyd indicates , Florida was shallow, maybe too shallow for larger Megs.

There was no rhyme or reason for selecting the specific spot that I dug. My advice to those who hunt the Meg in the Peace river is that Megs are where you find them -- enjoy the searching!!!

Is it even possible to go to the Peace and NOT find fossils? I'm not so sure.

Lots of great places in Florida to hunt. I also love the creeks in Gainesville, the only issue there is finding a place to park... the police will ticket you for parking on the side of the road.

Not like a mammoth at all. Mammoth is much bigger (type "mammoth foot" in google pictures). I don't know from what animal the toe bone is, but it looks interesting. And the Meg is a beauty...
