Gmr Id's Needed

John Hamilton

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have a few items from my last (2) trips to GMR that I need help identifying. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Item #1 (pics 1-6)

Looks like a skull cap with a cranial endocast to me?

Item #2 (pics 7 and 8)

I think this may be a Gar Scale?

It is from Greens Miil Run so it may be Late Cretaceous or newer.

Thanks, John

I cannot wait to hear what others have to say eat%20popcorn.gif

I love that fossil!

Me too! As soon as I saw it in the screen I let a yelp that startled my wife. I immediately thought of your post of a similar item. I have been trying to find more info on it but I haven't found anything yet. Hopefully someone will know what it is.

another brain cast!? man, some fossil hunters get all the luck.

It was definitely luck or maybe karma since I chose fossil hunting over Turkey yesterday.

The first one is fish. I have one pretty much just like it. I doubt its a brain endocast but I could be wrong.

#3 is an interesting tooth for sure. Not sure i've seen one like that before.

#4 on the far right may be a very worn mosasaur tooth.

The last one I think is a rock. We do find pottery in there and it's quite obvious that it is made of clay and usually has tool marks on the sides.

Thanks for the info. Maybe we'll run into each other one of these days and you can show me where the real teeth are.

I agree with RickNC that the first item is fish, more specifically hyperostosed fish skull. I've never seen one exactly like it but the general outline is similar to some I have seen. If you go to www.elasmo.com and go to the Lee Creek section and click on Teleosts, you will see several types of hyperostosed fish skulls. I think your shark tooth #3 is a badly worn Serratolamna serrata.

Here are a couple of my GMR finds that are similar to item #1.

Yes looks like brain material to me.. Yours reminds me of the

of the parasphenoid bone, forming the roof of the mouth. I think

John's shows the whole brain.. Keep in mind I am not an expert..

I sure wish the GMR was closer.. Brain material is my favorite all time fossil!

I'll bet there are more to find there too..

Way cool find!

Thanks for the confirmation on the fish skull I.D. :D I'm still undecided on the tooth I.D. though I need to see a few more samples of Serratolamna serrata to be sure.
