Any Sites Near Waco,tx

Hello Everyone,

My Wifey and myself are in Waco, TX for the next 2 weeks (until the 25th) for training in our newest business and I have extra time next weekend (January 21 and 22) for fossil hunting. Does anyone know of some good sites close by? It would be great to go hunting with a follow member, but I do not expect a member to drop everything to help me fossil hunt on such short notice. We thought we would not extra time while here in Texas, but it turns out we will have the weekends off. Thanks for any and all help.

I'll get back to you with details on one place. In the meantime, search the forum Hunting Trips for "Waco Pit".

You'll probably hear from a few others.

Thank you very much, MikeD! I found some great info, I did not find out how I get a permit though. Can I get a one day permit? How long does it take to get approval? Can I get a permit at the "pit" the day I want to hunt?

Go to http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/waco/ and it will give you the address, phone, etc. Call them and tell them you want a permit for the research pit for the whole weekend. That way you can come and go as you please on both days. It is probably easiest to drive over there and get it in person since you are already in Waco or you may be able to make some arrangements, fax, whatever. You need to get it during the week as I believe they are closed on the weekend. Your group can be the fossil forum or whatever club you are a member of. It is easy and the people there are very nice and friendly.

Rubber boots are a good idea. You can get some cheap ones at Walmart or Academy. Most of the fossils are really small. A small pointy tool or screwdriver is about all you need. Ziploc bags, small containers, pill bottles, old clothes, gloves, maybe a magnifying visor, maybe knee pads and don't forget water.

Check out the map here. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=214173209449396905977.0004b6b1506edde4597f0&msa=0&ll=31.601913,-97.21128&spn=0.013908,0.01929

Oh, you will pass the Waco Mammoth Site on the way out. http://www.wacomammoth.org/

Probably worth checking out.

I have my permit in hand(the people @ COE are very friendly and helpful!), bought some cheap shoes, got water bottle and heading to "the pit" tomorrow morning. 70 degrees @ 8:00p.m. in Waco, TX today! Fossil hunting in January for a Wisconsin boy is unheard of, let alone needing water due to heat! I will try and post a report tomorrow when I get back.

Quick question: the rules state that you can take 2 handheld size fossils. Does this mean if I find microfossils, I can only keep 2 or 2 handfuls? I thought of this question after the office closed...of course!

I had never heard of that rule before but to me hand held fossil means larger,

like what would fit in the palm of your hand.. No, it doesn't sound like they are speaking of

micro fossils at all.. Unusual to find large fossils there.. This is just my opinion.. I wonder

when they added that.. hmmm

Knee pads and gloves are nearly necessary at the Waco pit in my opinion. You'll need to get down on the ground and crawl around to find stuff. I still remember the pain in my knees and the palms of my hands after crawling around that place for a few hours. I would put those two items towards the top of my list on things to bring to that place.

Ramo

oops, just noticed he's allready there. Hope he took knee pads!!

I just got back from my hunt and I had a great time. I only spent 2 hours there checking the place out and found a couple of neat things (most I left due to the 2 item rule) I will be heading back tomorrow for a few hours around mid-day. 50 degrees, perfect fossil hunting weather and I got to see a group of wild boars running throught the park. This place is breathtaking in my opinion, I truely enjoyed myself, billygoating around for a couple of hours. I took some pics to share, I also took a hash plate and some type of oyster or clam as well. This place is a true State treasure and I am glad they are protecting it for future collecting.

I did not have any knee pads, nor did I need them. Once my eyes got acclumated to the surroundings, the fossils are everywhere! Oh, did I mention I was the only person in the pit and my permit was #7 for the year!....priceless!

I will try and get some close ups with my cell and show them in a few minutes.

O.K. here are a few close ups....

The plate has leaves on one side and shells on the other side.

P.S. I can not say enough about the kindness and how helpful the people @ COE are. They went out of their way to help.

The reason I only had 2 hours at the Waco pit today, I spent the morning at the Whiskey Bridge. Here are my finds from there....
