Fossildude19
Hello all. I thought I would share with you my visit last summer to the Museum of the Earth, (P.R.I.) in Ithaca, NY. We were coming back from the yearly family reunion over the fourth of July holiday. We usually pick somewhere in Upstate NY to camp, (and fossil hunt) on the way back to Connecticut from Rushford, NY. This year, My family and I decided to stay for a few days in Ithaca. It's a beautiful area, with lots of state parks and waterfalls. (The area catch phrase is : Ithaca is Gorges! ) Although I did not have any luck with fossil hunting, not that I looked too much - was too busy going through my finds from my trip with Carmine - aka - xonenine - (see HERE and HERE if you missed it the first time around) and a trip to the Penn Dixie quarry! The family and I did have the opportunity to visit the Museum of the Earth. The Museum of the Earth was not far from our campsite, and well worth the price of admission. We were lucky, in that the feature exhibit while we were there, was "Cruising the Fossil Freeway" with tons of artwork from the book of the same name, by Kirk Johnson - art by Ray Troll. What a treat to see all of the amazing artwork up close! I was really quite impressed with the Museum's collection, not only of fossils, but of replica casts of fossils, as well as models of prehistoric creatures. I was also impressed with the collection of fish and dino prints from the Newark Supergroup. The Nicholas G. McDonald collection is housed at the PRI, and they have a decent number of fossils on display. The fossil displays were all extremely well done, and the Hyde Park Mastodon was amazing! If you ever get the chance to stop in and visit, I heartily suggest that you do so. I will be posting the pics of our trip over the next few days, so be sure to check back. So, without too much further comment, I will allow the pictures to tell the story. Enjoy! MarleysGh0st
I'm glad you enjoyed your visit, but the slogan is "Ithaca is Gorges". Or, for those with a more satirical outlook, it's "10 square miles surrounded by reality".
nearpass
I live only a half hour from the Museum of the Earth, and have watched the development there for several years. They've done an excellent job, and one has to know that PRI (Paleontological Research Institute) and Cornell University have both been involved in this. Their exhibits are geared for the geology/paleontology of the Finger Lakes Region, which has a wonderful Silurian and Devonian history, but also has some great mastodons/mammoths too. Fantastic experience, especially for those not familiar with the area. Edited January 18, 2012 by nearpass
