Wrangellian
I wonder how much drool they have to mop up off those floors every day... BTW I wish they would include the location info on their labels! Wonder why they omitted that.. I'd like to see a closer up show of that Phylum Echinodermata wall. Oo, they have a Diplomoceras? Can't wait. Edited January 19, 2012 by Wrangellian

Can't wait. There are the larger signs we see in those photos and then there are more detailed labels with the location information. etc., nearby. You can see a glimpse of those in some of the photos, like the second and fifth Eurypterid ones. If it's not stealing fossildude's thunder, you can read about the Diplomoceras in the feature article of the Summer 2010 issue of American Paleontologist. Or maybe you should wait until tomorrow! Fossildude19
Nah,... I don't mind at all, Marley's Ghost! I only got one so-so shot of the Diplomoceras. Some disclaimers... I am not a professional photographer, and I have a cheap digital camera. I took a ton of shots of the fossils, and am trying to post only the ones that came out decently. I just remember thinking, " Man the forum folks are gonna want to see this!". Just an idea of posting a quick virtual field trip to the museum. The place in person is fantastic, and they have a ton of casts of actual fossils, which is a nice alternative to having nothing, if you can't afford an actual t-rex or whatever. Besides, ... I figured if I did too good a job, no one would want to go there themselves! Museum of the Earth deserves a visit if you're in the Ithaca NY area! Fossildude19
One of the things I was excited about was the fact that P.R.I. houses the Nicholas G. McDonald collection. Mr. McDonald has collected extensively in the the Newark Supergroup, and actually re-discovered a number of long lost fossil sites here in Connecticut and Massachusettes. I was completely stoked to see that they actually have more Newark Supergroup fish on display here than in any of the other Museums I've ever visited here in CT! This was the highlight of the Museum for me. Starting with some dino prints from the Newark Supergroup,... and then ... We'll finish with the fish!!! Continued.... MarleysGh0st
I'd like to see a closer up show of that Phylum Echinodermata wall. Since Fossildude is tired out from posting all these pictures and it's a little inconvenient for him to go back for more, I'll respond to this special request. First, a wider angle view of that wall. Note that the detailed labels for these specimens are in the form of flip-top pages, in front of the wall: Now a few close-ups of the Echinoderms: And the labels for all of these:
MarleysGh0st
I'll also add another close-up of that large boulder full of horn coral, that we saw at the start of the tour, along with its label: And since Fossildude's camera seemed to overlook views that didn't have fossils in the middle of them I'll add one that's important to me, Fossil Lab: All those buckets of fossils that we bring in from Portland Point will end up in those trays on the table. Visitors to the museum can look through those, get help identifying the fossils they find, and take one home with them. Clearly, this station is aimed at kids, but our adult visitors are welcome, too!
