RickNC
I had that happen. Had a hatchback where the back seats folded completely flat. I had about five buckets back there and I had to slam on my brakes coming home and one spilled all over the back. Took me hours to get all that stuff out of floor and under the rear seats. Glad I got a truck now.
Tarheel59
Yeah Taffie I live close enough and have never been there. One of these days I hope to make it or at least get some spoil material to hunt through. (note to self if I ever get there take plenty of buckets with me)
MakoMeCrazy
Do you guys know if they will replenish the piles the week before the annual fossil fest? When do they replenish them in the summer? If they do?
sixgill pete
Do you guys know if they will replenish the piles the week before the annual fossil fest? When do they replenish them in the summer? If they do? They normally change out the piles in January and a few weeks before the festival. Sometimes they do it later in the summer/fall also. I wonder if one can call the museum and ask about the quantity left.
Tarheel59
Taffie I am sure if you call they can tell you when they were put out there, but not sure if or how fresh they are as many people probally go through parts of them and on times when museum people are unaware of... obsessed1
I bring home material to look for the small/micro fossils. I tend to look for piles of materal that has already been sifted to take home. While the few larger teeth will be gone you don't have to drag home the larger pieces of rock. It all depends on what fossils you are after I guess.
Tarheel59
I have never been Daryl so anything I would get from there to bring home to sift or sift there would be great. Many moons ago I was member of gem and mineral club in W-S.NC and we got to search through a styro-foam cup each of material. I found a few teeth in mine. I would love to have a whole pile or even a couple of 5gal buckets of stuff. It is on my bucket list of things to do this year hopefully to get down there.... Jeff/Tarheel I was going to get a me a couple buckets of GMR yesterday but I could not get in at 5th st park to get any. I too love the micros

cowsharks
There's more material than you can shake a stick at. Once the new stuff arrives, folks that live closest to the area usually hit the piles first, but there's always plenty to search through. Even if you don't fin too much surface collecting there, you're guaranteed to find tons of stuff in the material you take home. Daryl.

obsessed1
Well if you are going to make it a 2 day trip you could always go through Greenville and hit GMR on the way to or from Aurora.
Tarheel59
Yes Taffie if you come all that way for Aurora you definitely need to hit GMR before or after. To make a very nice trip out of it... Jeff

Taffie
GMR sounds like a great idea. I will add it to my trip planner. I need to do some research on the best place to access.

Tarheel59
Taffie not sure if you keep up on the GMR hunts here on TFF or not so I am going ahead to tell you if you do not like water sometimes chest high get some waders before you come and bring an old pair of sneakers or boots that can get soaked. Have a shovel and screening box. Bring something to snack on if you need that during the day and a water bottle or cooler can work also... GMR is right inside the city of Greenville,NC and from the creek you can see someones backyard in some areas you seem out in the middle of nowhere too. There is places to stay motels around Greenville to stay the night and plenty to choose from to eat also. There are two access points really for GMR one being 5th street park and then Elm street park off 10th street. This are available during the week anytime during the day. On w/e's you have a little more in places to park, If you come up you can PM anyone of us and get more info as needed... Jeff
