I went hunting for a couple hours today near the part of GMR where it meets the TAR river. It was super cold and my feet were numb after an hour. i had to use the floating screen and shovel instead of the raquet ball raquet.

I did find a cool piece of tooth that i think is mastodon or mammoth.

Nice GW's. I haven't heard about folks collecting that close to the Tar River. Thanks for posting. I always love reading about GMR hunts.

Tom,

Did you actually collect right where the creek meets the tar? If so I am surprised it wasn't too deep. In my experience that area is far too deep for collecting this time of year. Couple nice great whites. I don't see any megs though.

Rick,

Nah i was a ways away from where it actually meets the Tar. I was close to the very back of the cemetary. I didnt find any complete megs just some broken pieces.

Oh ok. Yeah I've been to that area before. Assuming you weren't wearing waders since you said your feet were really cold. Now that's dedication!

Nice finds Tom. Thanks for sharing.. Were you using a 1/4 screen looks like it?? I have yet to hunt that side of 5th. Is the park back open down at 5th also?? It was closed last time I was down that way for repair to the gravel parking lot. Jeff/Tarheel

I was using 1/4 inch. Yea theyre done with the repairs, the parks open. Theres not as much gravel as you get closer to the river. Alot of mud..clay and sand, but there are some sweet spots still.

Ive got some hip waders that i was wearing, they even have some insulation inside the boot. But after an hour or so of standing in the water they didnt keep the cold out. You gotta take a couple dishtowels out there and keep drying your hands as well.

Wow that lower great white is sweet! I havnt been below fifth street in a couple years now. Whenever I was down there I didnt find much, and I would always get drawn back to the spots that produced well for me in the past. Looks like you had a pretty good day though...

DO, or do not. There is no try.

Tom, those two great whites are awesome. I have seen a nice tooth or two come from that section of GMR.

For sure! I was hoping to find something amazing because it wasnt the normal hunting grounds. For the first hour i had no luck but all the good stuff eventually showed up. Theres fossils the whole length of GMR, it just takes some time to find em.

The nice GW's are always a favorite find. Even when theyre smaller theyre still pretty cool! My album has some pretty decent GW's that ive pulled outta GMR too.

Do you have pics from other angles of that tooth fragment? It doesn't look like mammoth to me.
